Τhe history of the 1st Primary School of Prosotsani

prosotsani_10The 1st Primary School of Prosotsani is a historic, emblematic school, the history of which bears testament to the values and ideals of the society of the historic town Prosotsani in a difficult period for the whole Hellenism. The decision and the chronicle of the building construction bear testament to the pride of place that was given by the local society to the Education in the prioritization of its values. Instigator and captivator of the sensitive, well-doer and patriotic souls and citizens of the county of the Patriarchate was the Martyr, Saint Chysostomos, Μetropolitan Bishop of Drama and later Bishop of Smyrna. His goal was to educate the Greek students so as to be spiritually fearless in the face of Bulgarian Exarchy. Obedient the flock to the Ethnarch with prime movers the elders and the famous family Mela, in 1907, in the house of one of them, Constantinos Katsigiannis, they held a meeting and decided the erection of the school building.
mitr_smirnisΤhe decision came into practise and in 1909 they inaugurated the crowning Hall that dominated and it is still dominating the centre of Prosotsani. In its school rooms reputable teachers taught, as Papageorgakopoulos A, Antoniadou E., Grikas St, Themelis G., Meladines A, Ioannidou V., Gourgoules H, and most of the inhabitants were educated. In the years of its function there were demotions, promotions, mergers. In its school playground a school garden functioned and it is still functioning and in its school rooms an Experimental Laboratory of Physics and a Library still function.Τhe 1st Primary School having laid its foundations in its strong roots in the depths of time looks upon its future with optimism, having as its beacon the precepts of its inspirer and its founders, as they were imprinted in the inscribed built-in plaque that was pledged perpetually: «Αρχιερεύοντος Χρυσοστόμου, χορηγούντος Μελά, συνεπιχορηγούντων Ορθοδόξων Ελλήνων Προσωτσάνης, το περικαλλές ωκοδομήθη των Μουσών τόδε Μέγαρον, ένθα εισιόντες παίδες Ελλήνων προγονικής της έσω και της θύραθεν σοφίας αρύεσθε νάματα».
